Frank's Journey

“I help people achieve, and often exceed their dreams.”

That’s a lofty claim. And Frank Montemurro can back it up.

Frank’s wide-ranging experience combines with his solid work ethic and affinity for numbers to blaze a trail to success when others simply can’t see the way.

Background

It all started in the  Bronx, NY. Growing up in a blue collar family, Frank had to earn his own money at an early age. When he was just 10 years old, Frank made sandwiches and mopped the floors at his uncle’s luncheonette. At 15, he spent his weekends shining shoes from sunrise until sundown at a country club in Scarsdale, NY.

Throughout high school and college, he prepped food at the Yonkers Race Track and waited tables at an upscale Italian restaurant (ask him about the time a buttery lobster tail slid off his tray onto a diner’s fancy red dress!).

All of his hard work paid off. Not only did Frank get a full scholarship to Fordham University earning his degree in Economics with a minor in Philosophy, but he also bought his own car, an electric blue Chevelle 396, and saved up for graduate school.  Wanting to be a well-rounded businessman, he earned an MBA with dual major of Marketing and Finance at Columbia University.

But don’t worry, Frank still had time for fun. He went to Woodstock! Yes, THE Woodstock back in 1969.

Business and Life Skills Foundation

The summer after graduate school, Frank volunteered on a political campaign for a New York State Senate Race. Before long, he was named the Campaign Manager and led the team to victory. He spearheaded two more successful political campaigns before shifting gears.

A chance encounter outside the dean’s office at Columbia led to Frank’s next adventure. Frank was waiting for his appointment to discuss his next step. It just happened that new product expert Ted Angelus was also waiting to meet with the dean. Angelus wanted to a hire a recent graduate for his growing consultant business. Their casual conversation was the start of a life-changing path for Frank. He landed that job before it was even posted.

Frank learned from the master. Angelus showed him the art of identifying the needs of consumers and how to effectively market new products to them. Over the next three years, Frank worked closely with the top management of Fortune 100 companies including Colgate-Palmolive, Gillette, 3M and General Foods to launch a wide array of new products. The consultant group became so successful it’s founder Angelus retired early!

Eager to gain hands-on experience running a business, Frank joined Miles Laboratories as a Brand Manager for Flintstones and One-A-Day vitamins. Once again, he learned from the best and excelled. His mentors added layers and depth to Frank’s business acumen. Frank now had all the pieces to the puzzle to run a business. Finance, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Packaging, Marketing, Advertising and People Management are all integral for success.

C-Suite Successes

A pharmaceutical company lured Frank to his first executive position – Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales. He put his experience into use running all aspects of the company’s business for 6 years. A highlight – developing Delsym, the first patented 24-hour cough syrup. From the C-Suite, Frank mentored younger colleagues to develop their skills and help them achieve their own dreams.

His next C-Suite challenge was to help a start-up company with a patented, FDA approved Stop Smoking Handheld computer.

As Executive Vice President, he spearheaded their entry into all the major drug chains and assisted with their foray into TV Infomercials using celebrites such as E.G Marshall and Florence Henderson.  Little did he know that this first blush with TV Marketing would become so important later on in his career.

Frank’s successes didn’t go unnoticed. A healthcare data services company sought out Frank to turn around their fledgling business as its new President and CEO. He changed the direction of the business with a new marketing and financial strategy and profits soared.

TV Shopping Wiz

As Frank says, “sometimes in life things take a funny turn.” His life changed forever in 1990 when he walked through a trade show expo with friends.

People were suddenly flocking to a booth that had been getting no attention just minutes earlier. That booth was selling massage balls – simple orange plastic balls with porcupine-like protrusions to rub away your stress. Exclamations of relief and sheer pleasure filled the convention hall as the booth attendant rolled the massage balls over the shoulders and backs of weary attendees.  Money was flying in as people grabbed the product off the shelves. Frank instantly understood the power of a live demonstration to drive sales, and saw an opportunity.

Frank took those massage balls and that powerful demonstration to QVC. They were a big hit on the air, selling 200,000 units in a few months. Frank had a new career in the fast-paced, highly-competitive 24/7 world of direct response TV. He spent 7 years bringing innovative new products to QVC, racking up more than $300 million in sales.

The other major shopping network, HSN, took notice. The president of HSN himself lured Frank to Florida in 1997, hiring him to work in-house sourcing and developing all types of products.

After a very successful 8 years, Frank struck out on his own. Today, he’s an icon in the industry, having sold thousands of products with more than $2 billion dollars in sales. He is an acknowledged authority in the TV Home Shopping Industry and has been featured in articles in INC, Entrepreneur, Marketing and Sales Management, and Income Opportunities magazines as well as contributing articles to TV Products Showcase.

For the past few years, Frank has taken his experience, skills and advice to small businesses and entrepreneurs to help them grow their businesses and thrive.

Some Fun

Now that we got business out of the way, here are some fun facts about me.

TRAVEL

Travel is a passion of mine and I’ve visited 30 countries so far with more to come. My favorites are Italy, particularly the Amalfi Coast and Capri; Barcelona and Ibiza; Greek Isles; Santorini and Mykonos; Buenos Aires and Rio; Munich and Budapest, Tokyo and Kyoto.

WOODSTOCK

I saw ads for this amazing concert with an unprecedented lineup of major and upcoming musicians.  Went to my favorite record store in the Bronx, NY and bought a ticket.  Had no idea what it would be like.  My stories will only be revealed in private conversations to protect the innocent!

LA OLYMPICS 1984

My company was spending a lot of advertising dollars with Sports Illustrated so they invited me to be their guest at the 1984 Olympics in LA. It was the thrill of a lifetime to see these young world-class athletes compete and their camaraderie.

WATERGATE BUILDING

Ironically after running a few political campaigns during Watergate, I was hired to be President/CEO of Medimetrik Healthcare Company located in the Watergate Building.  Had great office overlooking the Potomac and we would watch Presidents’ Helicopter taking him to Camp David.

JOAN RIVERS

I was very fortunate to attend Joan River’s Christmas Eve parties for 3 years at her home in NYC. My girlfriend at the time was Joan’s Show Host on QVC and we had some much fun with her and met Marvin Hamlisch, Tim Conway and Phil Spector (who was strange) there.

CONCERTS

I’ve been a music fan since I was very young from the beginnings of Rock ‘N Roll and Doo Wop to Classic Rock, Pop Rock, R&B/ Motown, Country, Jazz and even EDM today!  Attended over 100 concerts and still counting.

SINGER

Yes I was a singer in a Doo Wop Group in the Bronx, called the Aristocrats.  Had a lot of fun for a few years then reached puberty, my voice changed and my dreams of being a teen idol were shattered!

ONE SHOE SHINE BOY

To make money to buy a car, I worked as a shoe shine boy on weekends at an exclusive Country Club in Eastchester, NY. Every year they had a charity goal tournament where I met Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino.

MODELING

It’s never too late.  My daughter, Alexis, needed a male model for a TV commercial shoot for M.Asam’s skincare product and the price was right as I did it for free. After some many years on the other side of the camera, I truly enjoyed this experience.  Hollywood here I come!

MAN OF HONOR

No I didn’t get married again! Because of Covid restrictions, my friend Nikolett’s father could not fly from Hungary to give her away at her wedding to her long-term boyfriend, Alex. They both moved here from Budapest 6 years ago. We became friends and I’m helping them with their business.  I was honored when she asked me to be her man of honor and to walk her down the aisle at their wedding on Clearwater Beach.

LIFETIME FRIENDS

My baseball team won the championship and landed on the front page of the Mount Vernon Daily Argus! That’s me at the end of the first row on the left, and my lifetime friend, John Moccio, is at the other end on the right.  We went to High School together and then 5 years ago found out we both lived in St Petersburg, FL! Now we get together for dinner every week and have fun reminiscing about these times and all our mutual friends.

FIRST MENTORING GIG

My first mentoring gig! This is my daughter Alexis at 4 years old. I was teaching her to use our state-of-the-art Commodore 64! During her teen years, Alexis soaked up every bit of business knowledge I threw her way and quickly became my protégé and assistant. As Alexis grew up, the business grew, too. Lucky for me, her natural talents and experience made her my perfect business partner. Now she has her own very successful business with beauty products.
